Dunlop takes Targa Tasmania podium clean sweep

11 April 2011

Dunlop tyres dominated the podium of the 20th anniversary of the Targa Tasmania tarmac rally (April 5-10), with the top three competitors across the finish line using Dunlop rubber as well as many of the category winners.

Queenslander Tony Quinn claimed his second modern Targa Tasmania title in three years with an emphatic display across five days and 500 kilometres of intense competition around the island state.

The 2009 winner was the dominant force in the 2011 event in his Nissan GT-R. He and co-driver, Naomi Tillet, took the lead on Targa stage four on the opening day, and were never headed, crossing the finish line at Hobart's Wrest Point three minutes and 39 seconds ahead of second placegetter, Dean Herridge, in a Subaru WRX STi. Matthew Sims was third, a further one minute 58 seconds in arrears.

Quinn drove his 2009 model Nissan GT-R to victory shod with Dunlop's SP Sport 600 tyres. The SP Sport 600 is the Original Equipment fitment on the Nissan GT-R, as well as other performance vehicles such as the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Subaru Impreza WRX STi.

Ken Wieden, Dunlop's National Motorcycle & Motorsport Manager, said that Dunlop's DZ03G tyre has also been very popular at Targa due to its superior dry and wet grip, and durability.

"Dunlop would like to congratulate all of the competitors in this year's Targa Tasmania rally, particularly those who chose Dunlop tyres to tackle the challenging racing conditions during event," Mr Wieden said.

"We were very pleased with how our products performed, particularly our OE (Original Equipment) fitments as well as our specialist motorsport tyres.

"The majority of the Dunlop-shod drivers were fitted with our DZ03G tarmac rally tyres, the same tyre that has taken out the title of Australia's best performing semi-slick in the MOTOR Magazine Tyre Test for the last three years.

"Features of the DZ03G include an asymmetrical tread pattern that offers excellent drainage capability, complemented with casing and profile designs that lift dry performance for improved even wear characteristics," he said.
